Interested in becoming a RISE Faculty Mentor?

Thank you for your interest in the MBRS RISE program! We are always delighted to add faculty as mentors to our program! As you know, the purpose of the FIU MBRS RISE program is to enhance the research environment at FIU and increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of students in pursuit of biomedical research careers. The goal of this program is to stimulate interest among underrepresented students in continuing on to a career in biomedical research and thereby increase the number of underrepresented minority scientists engaged in biomedical research. The main focus of the RISE program is the student research training effort which takes place at designated laboratories of approved MBRS RISE mentors. This ‘Student Research Experience’ provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to receive compensation while acquiring work experience in research labs.

In order to be considered for RISE mentorship status, all new potential mentors should submit the following:

  • CV – with any student mentoring history at the very end (particularly as it relates to underrepresented students)
  • Resources – laboratory & office facilities of the RISE mentor
  • 2-3 Page description of research project in which the RISE fellow will be participating
  • Commitment letter printed on FIU letterhead stating that you have a history/or experience working with underrepresented students in a research environment; You have an active research program in the area of _________; You have agreed to mentor students and provide them with a research training opportunity in your lab as well as assume the responsibility of providing instruction to your students in appropriate techniques, etc.

Kindly email the above-mentioned information to the MBRS RISE Program Coordinator, Courtney D. Aiken at coaike@fiu.edu.  Each potential new mentor’s packet will be reviewed and approved by the FIU MBRS RISE Advisory Board.

Once again, thanks so much for helping promote the FIU MBRS RISE program at FIU!
