The main focus of the RISE program is the student research training effort which takes place at designated laboratories of approved MBRS RISE mentors. This ‘Student Research Experience’ provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to receive compensation while acquiring work experience in research labs. RISE fellows are involved in all phases of the research process from receiving training in literature searches and laboratory techniques, to data collection and analysis. By working alongside advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as active research faculty and interacting in the larger scientific establishment, RISE fellows gain a better understanding of the biomedical career path. All RISE fellows are required to give an oral presentation at the annual FIU MARC U*STAR & MBRS Mini-Symposium each fall term.

Aside from the advising provided by the RISE trainee's home department, the RISE program will provide advising, informally by the faculty mentor and other members of the lab and formally by the RISE Program Coordinator and RISE Program Director.
